Using the Harmonica in Physical Therapy

Physical therapy is a very important part of medical care. If a person suffers an injury, it’s often physical therapy that can help nurse them back to health.
PT, as it is called, is also important for people who have suffered stroke or brain damage from other causes. But there is a new and somewhat ingenious tool being used by many physical therapists -- the harmonica.
For people who suffer from COPD, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, the harmonica is a tool that can help people learn how to breathe more efficiently.
Many smokers develop a form of COPD called emphysema, which requires pursed lip breathing to get air out of the lungs. The harmonica actually trains the patients and increases breathing strength
